چکیده

Recent imaging campaigns indicate the likely existence of massive planets (∼ 1− 10 MJ ) on ∼> 1000 year orbits about a few percent of stars. Such objects are not easily explained in most current planet formation models. In this Letter we use ensembles of 100 N-body simulations to evaluate the potential for planet scattering during relaxation of dynamically active systems to explain the population of giant planets with projected separations up to a few 100 AU. We find that such a mechanism could indeed be at play, and that statistical samples of long period planets could place interesting constraints on early stage planet formation scenarios. Results from direct imaging and microlensing surveys are complementary probes of this dynamical relaxation process. Subject headings: planets and satellites: formation — methods: N-body simulations

Long Period Exoplanets

Recent imaging campaigns indicate the possible existence of massive planets on ∼> 1000 year orbits about a few percent of normal stars. Such objects are not easily explained in most current planet formation models. In this Letter we use a large ensemble of N-body simulations to evaluate the potential for planet scattering during relaxation of dynamically active systems to explain very long peri...

Exploring exoplanet populations with NASA's Kepler Mission.

The Kepler Mission is exploring the diversity of planets and planetary systems. Its legacy will be a catalog of discoveries sufficient for computing planet occurrence rates as a function of size, orbital period, star type, and insolation flux. The mission has made significant progress toward achieving that goal. Over 3,500 transiting exoplanets have been identified from the analysis of the firs...

First Results from the CHEPS ⋆ : Exoplanets and the Discovery of an Eccentric Brown Dwarf in the Desert †

We report the discovery of a brown dwarf on an eccentric orbit and with a semimajor axis that places it in the brown dwarf desert region around the star HD191760. The star has a spectral type of G3IV/V and a metallicity ([Fe/H]) of 0.29 dex. HD191760 adds to the small number of metal-rich stars with brown dwarf companions. The brown dwarf (HD191760b) is found to have an orbital period of 505.57...

Four New Exoplanets and Hints of Additional Substellar Companions to Exoplanet Host Stars

We present four new exoplanets: HIP 14810b and HIP 14810c, HD 154345b, and HD 187123c. The two planets orbiting HIP 14810, from the N2K project, havemasses of 3.9 and 0.76MJ. We have searched the radial velocity time series of 90 known exoplanet systems and found new residual trends due to additional, long period companions. Two stars known to host one exoplanet have sufficient curvature in the...

Estimations of orbital parameters of exoplanets from transit photometry by using dynamical constraints

The probability of the detection of Earth-like exoplanets may increase in the near future after the launch of the space missions using the transit photometry as observation method. By using this technique only the semi-major axis of the detected planet can be determined, and there will be no information on the upper limit of its orbital eccentricity. However, the orbital eccentricity is a very ...
